Senior Chuck Hayes scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while teammate Kelenna Azubuike knocked down a game-high 26 points to rally the Blue squad to an 84-76 win over the White team in Kentucky?s preseason scrimmage Saturday before a Memorial Coliseum crowd of 7,500.

The Blue team was behind by six, 47-41, at halftime, but opened the second half on a 20-10 run and never trailed again. Hayes and Azubuike were joined by freshmen guards Rajon Rondo (8 points, three assists) and Ramel Bradley (19 points, four assists) on the Blue squad.

?Overall, I think we did ok,? head coach Tubby Smith said. ?We shot the ball well ? the white team shot especially well in the first half ? but I am still concerned about turnovers. But, that will happen when you are running up and down the court like we are.?

Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half, but the Blues improved to 69 percent in the second half on 18-of-26 shooting, while the Whites were limited to 37 percent (11-of-30).

Guard Patrick Sparks matched Hayes? numbers (21 points, 10 rebounds) for the White team. He also had five assists and four steals while playing all 40 minutes. Other White players in double figures were Josh Carrier with 15 and freshmen Joe Crawford (15) and Randolph Morris (12).

?I think we played well today,? Hayes said. ?It was an exciting game to play in. Both teams showed a lot of athleticism. There were a few things we didn?t execute well, but those are things that will come with time.?

UK opens exhibition play Nov. 3 against Northern Kentucky. The regular-season opener is Nov. 20 at home against Coppin State.
