LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky rifle team takes to the road this weekend for a pair of Great American Rifle Conference matches against Ole Miss and Memphis in Oxford, Miss.
?This should be a good competition for us,? said Kentucky coach Harry Mullins. ?Ole Miss has a program that has really improved in the past few years. Both teams we play this weekend are capable of competing for the conference championship.
The Wildcats face the Rebels on Saturday and the Tigers on Sunday. Both matches will be at the Ole Miss range.
Last weekend, Kentucky fired a season high 4627, including a 2329 in air rifle, to beat Ohio State. Three shooters registered air rifle scores in the 580s in the contest.
?We?ve really started progressing as a team,? said Mullins. ?We want to be the type of team that improves a little bit each time we go out and I think we?re in a great position to do that. I?m not as concerned with the scores we?re shooting right now as long as we keep progressing.?
Freshman Ray Geyer and junior Vicki Goss sparked the team as each shot a 587 or better in both smallbore and air rifle. It was the second straight week Geyer posted high scores for Kentucky in both events.
?Ray did a nice job again and Vicki shot like she is capable of,? Mullin noted. ?But we need to be where we have four or five people shooting in the mid 580s and we have the talent to do that.?
