The Kentucky volleyball team returns home from a two-game road swing to host Georgia and No. 8 Florida at Memorial Coliseum for UK Volleyball Alumni Weekend. The Wildcats will welcome back a number of former letterwinners as they face the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Friday and the Gators at 1 p.m. Sunday.
UK (10-5, 1-3 Southeastern Conference), which split a pair of matches on the road to South Carolina and Tennessee last weekend, won its first conference game of the season last Friday night, defeating the Gamecocks, 3-2, in Columbia. It was UK?s first win over USC since the 1999 season and the first Kentucky victory in Columbia since 1993.
The weekend will mark a homecoming for a number of former Cats, including the head coaches of both teams facing Kentucky. Georgia?s head coach Mary (Jones) Buczek lettered for the Wildcats from 1986-89, during which time Florida head coach Mary Wise was an assistant on the Kentucky staff. In addition, Buczek was an assistant coach for Wise at Florida from 1993-94 and a student assistant at Kentucky in 1990.
The Cats are led by outside hitter Danielle Wallace, who is averaging 4.36 kills per game. Wallace tallied 21 kills in Kentucky?s win over the Gamecocks. UK?s offense is sparked by a pair of setters?Ki Eveland and Leigh Marcum?who both are averaging over 10 assists per game. Both members of the setting duo rank in the top 10 for assists in the SEC.
Melissa Popp has come on strong as of late for the Wildcats. Popp tied a career-high with 16 digs in the South Carolina game and had a season-high 11 kills in a loss to Auburn two weeks ago. Libero Jenni Casper is leading Kentucky defensively with an average of 4.56 digs per game, which ranks second in the conference.
