LEXINGTON ? Jibran Shteiwi scored his first career goal in the 89th minute to lead Kentucky to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
The win extended the Wildcats (6-2-1) unbeaten streak to seven games, which ties the school record. Kentucky?s home unbeaten streak was improved to 10 games, which broke the school mark.
?Today we didn?t play our best, but we won,? said Kentucky coach Ian Collins. ?That?s just the run of the green. Maybe we need a little bit of luck and maybe we?re due a little luck, but we?ll take it. Ohio State did play well in the second half, you have to give them credit.?
Shteiwi did not enter the game until the 84th minute, but provided the difference. Michael Strong played the ball across the box from deep in the left corner and it bounced off a defender right to Shteiwi ? six yards out at the back post ? who buried it.
?I thought we needed a bit of a spark. We had struggled out wide,? Collins said of the decision to insert Shteiwi late. ?Riley (O’Neill) was hurt and couldn?t come back so we had to look down the bench. Jibran has been sharp in training and he got his chance and buried it.?
Strong, a freshman, got Kentucky on the board first in the 36th minute of play. He won the ball between two Buckeye defenders at the edge of the box, turned and beat Ray Burse for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the second for Strong, who was playing in just his third career game.
?Michael took his first goal well and was very dangerous in the second half,? Collins said. ?He created three or four chances for himself and then created the winning goal. He has come on in leaps and bounds.?
The game looked to be headed for overtime before Shteiwi?s heroics. Ohio State had provided pressure for most of the second half and that resulted in a Xavier Balc goal in the 72nd minute. His shot, from 20 yards out in the middle of the field, went just past the outstretched arms of a diving Andy Gruenebaum and just inside the left post.
Even with the offensive pressure by Ohio State, Kentucky was able to keep the scoring chances to a minimum. The Buckeyes fired just 10 shots overall despite having eight corner kicks. Gruenebaum made four saves.
?Ohio State has a ton of seniors and a ton of experience. I?m happy for our guys. They just stuck at it and that?s the way soccer goes,? Collins noted.
In a physical game, the teams combined for eight yellow cards, three for Kentucky.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts third-ranked Michigan.
