University of Kentucky basketball coach Orlando ?Tubby? Smith was awarded a Kentucky Distinguished Service Medal Wednesday, the highest civilian award presented by the Kentucky National Guard. The award, presented by Colonel Ron Turner on behalf of Major General Don Storm, is in recognition of Smith?s unwavering support of the nation?s military members and their families.
Smith has been an active supporter of the Kentucky National Guard throughout his more than seven years in the Bluegrass. He has stayed involved with the organization through public service announcements, including one filmed Wednesday for Kentucky troops in Iraq.
While the Kentucky National Guard is just one of the many organizations Smith gives his time to, it is one near to his heart. Smith?s father, Guffrie, is a World War II veteran.
