Oxford, Miss. ? The Kentucky track and field team wrapped up competition Sunday at the 2004 Southeastern Conference by placing 10 student-athletes in the top-eight of their respective events. The Cats finished the four-day event in eighth place in the women?s standings and in ninth on the men?s side.
Hunter Spencer took the best finish in the last day of the championships, coming in third in the 1,500-meter run Sunday in a season-best time of 3:41.36, bettering his NCAA Regional and Olympic Trials qualifying marks. Fellow senior Thomas Morgan ran eighth in the event in 3:45.82. On the women?s side, Brooke Patterson came in seventh, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:22.34. The senior placed in two of the final events on Sunday, also taking seventh in the 800 meters in a time of 2:06.19.
Kris Landers and Beth Heimann kept up their impressive 800-meter times, as both came in fifth in the finals. Tony Tzounakais also scored for the Cats on Sunday, tossing a season-best mark of 172-04.00 in the men?s discus to take seventh place.
UK finished the evening portion of the day with Caitlin Phillips taking fifth in the 5,000-meter run, while the women?s 4 x 400-meter relay team put together a season-best performance in the race with a seventh-place finish of 3:41.74.
