VanSickel Named to All-America Strength Team: Nate VanSickel, a senior offensive lineman on the 2003 Kentucky football team, has been named to the 2003 All-America Strength Team as chosen by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Each year, the NSCA recognizes football players whose exceptional dedication and performance in the weight room enables them to maximize their performance on the field.
VanSickel came to UK as a walk-on lineman. He earned his first varsity action as a junior in the 2002 season, playing in 11 games as a reserve defensive tackle. He moved to the offensive line in the spring of 2003 and quickly adapted to his new position. He played in 11 games last season, including starting assignments in the win over Murray State and against Florida.
?Nate?s work in the weight room gave him a chance to play major-college football,? said UK Strength Coach Marc Hill, who nominated VanSickel for the award. ?From walk-on to a player who started in the Southeastern Conference, Nate is what a strength coach hopes to have out of each player.?
Since 1976, UK has had 22 players named to the NSCA All-America team. This is the third consecutive year that UK has had a player honored, including VanSickel, linebacker Ronnie Riley (2002), and safety Patrick Wiggins (2001).
