WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? No. 25 Kentucky men?s golf team shot a 571 (291-280) through the first two rounds of the Boilermaker Invitational to sit in second-place after day one of the tournament. Purdue, the tournament host, shot a 562 (285-277) to claim the lead going into the third and final round on Sunday. The Wildcats are one stroke ahead of third-place Colorado (288-284=572).
The Cats were paced by junior John Holmes who shot a 142 (72-70) on the first 36 holes. Holmes is currently tied for 12th as an individual and is one of four Wildcats in the top-20. Brandon Waldrop (73-70=143) and Tyler Wilson (73-70=143) finished the day tied for 14th and Mark Blakefield?s 144 (74-70) moved him into 19th place. Matt Wells rounded out Kentucky?s lineup with a 148 (73-75) and sits tied for 37th.
Kentucky is playing well despite competing in the tournament against some of its toughest competition this season. UK currently leads No. 7 Oklahoma State (295-292=587), No. 13 TCU (293-285=578) and No. 19 Oklahoma (301-287=588).
The final 18 holes are set to tee off tomorrow at 8 a.m., at the Kampen Golf Course at the Birk Boilermaker Golf Complex.
