Nick Devenport won his first race as a Wildcat Friday at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. Devenport, who transferred to UK from Baylor this year, won the 1,500-meter run with an impressive time of 3:48.76. Teammate Jean Balan broke a personal best while also placing in the event, as he took sixth in 3:49.82.

?I’m real happy with my performance tonight,? Devenport said. ?Coming into the race I had no idea I would be able to do well because I was injured the whole indoor season. This was only my second (outdoor) race. I didn’t know what to expect; I just wanted to get into the mix and compete and see what I had at the finish and if I could make it that long. I surprised myself.?

Andy Fryman turned in two impressive performances Friday, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in both the discus and shot put. Fryman?s toss of 173-03.00 in the discus competition placed him third in the event, while the phenomenal freshman?s launch of 54-05.50 in the shot put landed him in 10th place. Senior Tony Tzouanakis also competed in the shot put, finishing 21st with a mark of 49-01.50.

Molly Lonergan and Ildiko Varga joined Fryman with regional qualifying marks, as both finished third in their sections of the discus with throws of 155-08.00 and 171-02.00, respectively. Talonda Ingram and Kendra Patton also competed in the 100-meter dash Friday, taking seventh in their heats, while the women?s 4 x 400-meter relay came in sixth in their preliminary heat with a time of 3:52.15.

Competition at the Texas Relays wraps up tomorrow at Myers Stadium.
