Kentucky looks to continue its winning ways when the Wildcat face No. 19/15 Georgia in Athens.
The Kentucky women?s basketball team travels to Athens, Ga., on Sunday, Feb. 29 to face the 19th-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. ET on their ?Senior Day? in the regular season finale for both teams. The game will be carried live on WLXG-AM Sports Radio 1300 with Chris Cross and on UK?s official web site at ukathletics.com.
The Wildcats (11-15, 3-10 Southeastern Conference) are looking to continue their winning ways after defeating Alabama and South Carolina last week. Georgia (18-8, 7-6 SEC) has lost three of its last five games, including a loss at Florida on Thursday.
?It?s always tough to play on the road but we are especially going to need to keep our focus at Georgia,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?It is their ?Senior Day? and they will be playing with a lot of emotion. It?s also an important day for seeding purposes. Georgia is probably hungry for a win after losing on Thursday and we are going to have to play well to beat them.?
The SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., is just around the corner as Sunday?s game will decide many of the seedings. Kentucky currently sits in the 11th seed but with a win over Georgia and an Alabama loss to Mississippi State, UK could jump to the 10th seed. A loss to the Lady Dogs and UK remains in the 11th spot. Georgia is in a three-way tie with Florida and Vanderbilt for fourth place and the remaining first round bye. The tournament pairings will be decided Sunday night.
This is the 33rd all-time meeting between Georgia and Kentucky. The Lady Bulldogs lead the series 24-8 and own an 11-2 edge when playing in Athens. The Cats are looking to snap a seven-game losing skid to UGA and avenge a 74-53 loss to the Lady Dogs earlier this season in Lexington. UK?s last win in Athens was a 71-70 decision in 1994.
Junior Sara Potts needs just seven points to become the 24th member of UK?s 1,000-point club while Senior SeSe Helm needs seven points to move up to No. 5 on UK?s all-time scoring list. Potts and Helm are UK?s top scorers and rebounders. Potts averages a team-high 16.5 points per game while Helm follows with 14.6 ppg. Helm is the team?s leading rebounder with 7.0 boards a game while Potts averages 6.5 rpg.
The Lady Dogs are without former leading scorer and 6-6 center Kara Braxton. The senior was dismissed last week for violation of team rules. The junior was leading the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Now leading the team is senior Christi Thomas with 13.1 ppg and 8.2 rpg. Also averaging double-figure scoring is Sherill Baker with 10.9 and freshman Janese Hardrick with 10.3 ppg.
