Ames, Iowa ? Brooke Patterson and Jeff Chakouian garnered first-place finishes in the mile run and shot put, respectively, Saturday at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. In addition to leading the pack in their events, Patterson and Chakouian also hit NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the meet.
Patterson established a new personal-best time in the mile with her finish of 4:44.48. Fellow senior Caitlin Phillips also established a qualifying mark with her personal-best time of 9:29.41 in the 3,000-meter run, smashing her previous personal best of 9:36.51 in the event. Also on the women?s side, Talonda Ingram, Kendra Patton, Olubusola Adeagbo and Rachel Kohler finished in the top-10 in their events at the classic. Ingram and Patton finished in the top-10 in sprint events, as Ingram came in ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62 and Patton finished in 10th in the 200 meters in 24.77. Adeagbo claimed an eighth-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.66, and Rachel Kohler came in seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5-06.50.
The men?s team fared well at the competition as well, led by Chakouian?s toss of 62-09.25 in the shot out. Andy Fryman joined Chakouian in the top-20 with his throw of 53-07.75 in the event. Also on the men?s side, Thomas Masthay finished in eighth in a preliminary heat of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.16 and Kris Landers landed in 11th in the mile in 4:09.68.
Both teams return to action Feb. 27-29, when UK hosts the Southeastern Conference Championships at the Nutter Field House.
