Miami, Fla. ? The Kentucky softball team opened the 2004 season with a 9-0 victory over Florida A & M on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Fun and Sun Classic in Miami, Fla. The Cats? second game of the day against host Florida International was postponed in the third inning due to inclement weather and will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
Sophomore Amy Kendall pitched three scoreless innings of work against the Lady Rattlers, giving up only one hit while striking out six en route to the win. Four Cats had multi-hit games, as Amber Janneck, Rachel Friberg, Emily Marks and Jessica Nance finished the game with two hits each. Janneck, Marks and Brooke Marnitz accounted for six of Kentucky?s nine runs with two RBIs apiece.
When play was postponed in second game, both UK and FIU were scoreless and neither had registered a hit in the game. The Cats will pick up play in the bottom of the third with two outs and a runner on first.
UK is now 2-6 in season openers. The Cats hold a 1-0 advantage over FAMU and a 2-0 lead over FIU in the all-time series.
In addition to the game against Florida International, the Cats will face Illinois State and Southeastern Conference foe Auburn tomorrow. The Cats and Redirds are set to get underway at approximately noon, and UK will face the Lady Tigers at 2 p.m.
