LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky gymnastics team (1-3, 0-2 SEC) will seek its first Southeastern Conference win of the season when it plays host to Auburn (0-2, 0-2 SEC) in a tri-meet that also features George Washington (4-1), Friday, Jan. 30, in Memorial Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
UK fell to No. 11 Arkansas and No. 2 Georgia in its first two SEC competitions and its schedule doesn?t get any easier this weekend when the No. 16 Tigers, under the direction of UK alumnus Jeff Thompson, come to Lexington.
?Our goal is to improve every week and finish the season in the top-18, to guarantee a seed at the regional championships,? UK Coach ?Mo? Muhammad said. ?We had a slight setback last weekend at Georgia, but our girls have been working very hard to polish their routines and be more consistent in all events. We are a young team and our best performances are yet to come.?
The Wildcats have a 29-16 all-time record against the Tigers, but Auburn won last season?s meeting, 196.650 ? 195.525 in Alabama. AU returns 10 athletes from its 2003 squad that finished 12th at the NCAA Championships.
UK is 16-2 all-time against George Washington. Kentucky defeated GWU 193.625 ? 191.500 last season at its annual Excite Nite extravaganza. The Colonials finished second in the GW Invitational last week and are under the direction of Margie Cunningham, who is in her 19th year at the helm.
