Burns, Abdullah, Mills, White Receive Honors from CollegeSportsReport.com: Defensive end Vincent ?Sweet Pea? Burns, free safety Muhammad Abdullah, nose tackle Lamar Mills, and linebacker Durrell White have received All-America honors from website CollegeSportsReport.com.
Burns was named second-team Junior All-America (a team comprised solely of players I n their junior year of eligibility), Abdullah was chosen second-team Sophomore All-America, and Mills and White received special-mention Freshman All-America accolades.
Burns led the SEC with 18 tackles for loss. He totaled 72 tackles, most by a UK defensive lineman since noseguard Joey Couch in 1991. Burns also had 2.5 quarterback sacks, one fumble caused, one fumble recovery, one safety, and a team-high 10 quarterback hurries.
Burns has been picked first-team All-Southeastern Conference by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Southeastern Football Saturdays, Mobile Press-Register, and CollegeFootballNews.com, and second-team All-SEC by The Associated Press and Birmingham News.
Abdullah led all SEC free safeties in interceptions with four pickoffs. He totaled 64 tackles, added a fumble recovery, and was second on the team in pass breakups with five. He was tabbed second-team All-SEC by the league coaches.
Mills totaled 52 tackles, including six tackles for loss (-20 yards), two quarterback sacks (-13), and two quarterback hurries. He was a first-team Freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News and first-team Freshman All-SEC by SEC Coaches and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
White had 43 tackles, including seven for loss (-21) and 2.5 sacks (-15), along with three pass breakups, six quarterback hurries, and one fumble recovery. He was a third-team Freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News and first-team Freshman All-SEC by SEC Coaches and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
Kentucky Cheerleaders Invite Fans to View Tonight?s Practice: The University of Kentucky cheerleading squad invites Wildcat fans to attend practice on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Seaton Center on the UK campus. This will be the squad’s final practice in Lexington before the national championship competition. Warm-ups begin at 6 p.m. and the cheerleaders will go through their competition routine at 7 p.m.
The squad will leave Friday morning for Orlando, Fla., site of the 2004 Universal Cheerleaders Association championship. The team will practice on Saturday, then compete for the title on Sunday.
The Kentucky cheerleaders have won an unprecedented 12 national championships in the UCA competition, including an eight-year title run from 1995-2002, and have been runners-up on five occasions, most recently in 2003. The cheerleaders are coached by Jomo Thompson and the team advisor is T. Lynn Williamson. UK will be represented by 16 cheerleaders. The UK mascots, Wildcat and Scratch, will compete in the mascot division.
