The Kentucky women?s basketball team looks to snap a six-game losing streak to Vanderbilt when they meet the 22nd-ranked Commodores in their conference opener on Thursday. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET in Vanderbilt?s Memorial Gym. Tickets are $7 and are available by calling the Vanderbilt ticket office at 615-322-GOLD or e-mailing . The game also will be carried live on WLXG Sports Radio 1300 with Chris Cross.
The Wildcats (8-5) completed their non-conference season on Tuesday with a convincing 83-45 win over High Point in Memorial Coliseum. UK?s eight wins heading into conference play are the most since the 1999-00 season when the Cats finished 8-4. The Cats are hoping to ride that momentum into Nashville when it faces the Commodores.
?Vanderbilt is traditionally very tough in our conference, and this year is no different,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?They lost Chantelle Anderson last year and Ashley McElhaney, but they were able to replace them pretty quickly. Ashley Early has stepped in and Jenni Benningfield has stepped up big. They have great shooters on the perimeter, so we are certainly going to have our hands full tomorrow night.?
UK meets Vanderbilt for the 32nd time in school history. The Commodores lead the all-time series 19-12 and are 10-4 against the Cats when playing in Nashville. The Wildcats? last win over the ?Dores was five years ago (Jan. 7, 1999), a thrilling 70-69 win in Lexington. However, UK?s last win in the Music City was in 1986 when the Cats defeated Vanderbilt, 79-70, on Feb. 5.
?Kentucky hasn?t defeated Vanderbilt in Nashville in a long time,? DeMoss said. ?It?s going to take a complete game of focusing on defense, rebounding and taking care of the ball to grab a win over any SEC team on their home floor.?
The Cats have won four of their last five games and have won four of their last six league openers. The Cats are 10-12 in conference openers, including a 2-1 record when meeting Vanderbilt. The last time UK met the Commodores in a conference opener was Jan. 7, 1990. VU won that contest 79-70 in Nashville. DeMoss is 3-4 vs. Vanderbilt.
Sara Potts broke the school-record for most three-pointers made in a game when she nailed seven treys for 23 points vs. High Point. SeSe Helm also added 23 on 100 percent shooting, hitting 7-of-7 from the field. Jenny Pfeiffer connected on 6-of-8 from the floor, including a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc for 17 points. The trio combined for 63 of UK?s 83 points and lead UK in scoring. Helm averages a team-best 16.2 points per game, while Potts and Pfeiffer follow with 14.9 and 11.6 ppg, respectively.
Vanderbilt leads the Southeastern Conference with a 12-1 overall record. Its only loss came to unbeaten and No. 25 Miami Hurricanes (12-0). The ?Dores fell 79-57 on Dec. 29 in the title game of the Gatorade Holiday Classic. Vanderbilt is coming off a 91-40 drubbing of Savannah State on Monday. Junior Abi Ramsey led VU with 20 points on 6-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc, tying a career high for threes.
Louisville native Jenni Benningfield leads four Commodores in double-figure scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game. She also is pulling down a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game along with teammate Ashley Earley. Ramsey narrowly follows Benningfield in the scoring column with 17.5 ppg.
