The Wildcats (2-0) are looking for their first 3-0 start since the 1998-99 season. UK finished 21-11 overall that season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
“I think it’s exciting,” UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. “Rupp Arena is such a great place to play and I’m excited about the crowds that we’ve been able to attract in Memorial. Playing a team like North Carolina will be a good challenge for us to see where we are and the team is excited to play. I want to see where we stand. We are going to have some tough games down the road when our conference starts, so this will be a good test for us early. Our players are excited to play at Rupp in a big-arena atmosphere.”
North Carolina comes to Rupp Arena ranked No. 13 ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 14 in The Associated Press poll. The Tar Heels are 2-0 with wins over St. Francis (Pa.) 80-44 and Hofstra 92-45.
Tar Heel head coach Sylvia Hatchell, who is in her 18th season at UNC, is one of six who will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in June. She has compiled a 360-175 mark at UNC and a 632-255 overall record in her 29-year career.
UNC returns three starters from a squad that finished 28-6 overall, 13-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) last season. Freshmen Camille Little and Ivory Latta lead five Tar Heel players in double-figure points, averaging 17.5 points apiece. Little and 6-6 center Candace Sutton are averaging double-digits rebounds with 11.0 and 10.0 rpg, respectively.
Senior center SeSe Helm has looked impressive in the Cats’ two games. Helm notched her ninth career double-double vs. IPFW and followed that performance with another 20 points and nine boards vs. Northwestern. Helm is tied with Karen Mosely at No. 16 on UK’s all-time scoring list with 1,135 career points. Sara Potts and Jenny Pfeiffer are averaging 16.0 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
UK’s last win over a ranked opponent was Jan. 6, 2000 vs. No. 5 Auburn (71-69). The game will mark the first of two games at Rupp Arena for the UK women this season. UK is 11-3 all-time at Rupp.
Kentucky will be back in Rupp Arena for its next home game on Wednesday, Dec. 3 vs. intrastate rival Louisville at 7 p.m. The Cats will spend Thanksgiving in San Francisco, Calif., at the Odwalla Classic. UK will meet Duquesne in the first round on Friday, Nov. 28.
