Kentucky freshman Joelle Schwenk scored two impressive victories Friday at the SEC Fall Classic in Peachtree City, Ga. The Coconut Creek, Fla. native defeated Arkansas’ Melissa Cornett by a 6-2, 6-2 count before eliminating South Carolina’s Fallen Koon in a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
“No one deserves better results than Joelle Schwenk,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “She has been a leader in every way and is a great person to have in our program.”
Freshman Sarah Foster claimed a significant victory in first-round action, defeating ITA Top-100 player Audra Falk of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 6-3. Foster would drop her second match, a 6-2, 6-2 decision, to South Carolina’s Danielle Wiggins.
In the “B” flight, junior Danielle Petrisko dropped her first-round match but rebounded for a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mississippi’s Virginia Tomatis. Freshmen Caroline Winebrenner and Christine Simpson also took straight-set first-round victories. Main draw, singles consolation and doubles play continue Saturday.
After defeating Florida’s Julie Rotundi in Thursday’s opening round of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor event in Ann Arbor, Mich., junior Aibika Kalsarieva fell shy in the round of 16, losing to eighth-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford, 6-1, 6-1.
