Head Coach Rich Brooks

On the defense…

“I was extremely pleased with the defensive effort we had tonight against a very difficult offense. They have scored points on virtually everybody they have played, and for us to perform with the disciplined effort…. to me it was an outstanding defensive effort.”

On substituting Jared for Shane in the first quarter…

“Offensively, obviously we started very shaky. Shane went in and did what I thought was an outstanding job, and then Jared came back in and played very well in the second half. We finally hooked up with what we thought we might get in the earlier part of the year with a pass to Shane from Jared for a touchdown and a big play.”

On playing a full game of football…

“I talk to my team every week about trying to play 60 minutes of football and we just haven’t done it. I am still looking for that first game, and I was hopeful this would be that game and it wasn’t. We came close to playing 60 minutes of defense today, but I thought our offense in the last 30 minutes of the game was very productive and very good. If we are going to be a factor against an SEC team we need to come closer to 60 minutes in all phases of the game.”

On the play of Jared Lorenzen

“I thought he was tentative and he just didn’t quite seem himself. He had no symptoms of any kind from the concussion, but I told him I just wanted to come over to the side and watch things for awhile and he was good with that. There is no problem because Jared is our starter.”

On the play of Ellery Moore

“Ellery Moore was a force tonight. He made a big sack and one of our advantages over Ohio was that our defensive line was a good matchup with their offensive line.”

On the play of Tommy Cook

“He made a big one. That was a Derek Abney play… I was really happy for Tommy. He is one of the hardest working guys on our team. He is a tough guy and it was great to see him get that kind of a play.”

UK Players

On tonight’s game…

“We really had a lot of responsibilities with the option coming in. Our guys really stepped it up tonight…”

On showing emotion…

“I think a lot of our guys weren’t having as much fun as they needed to, so we talked about that. You know when a guy steps up and plays well, it’s good to show some emotion.”

On preparing for Ohio…

‘We weren’t sure what to expect, but we were fundamentally sound coming in. We showed that we were for real.”

#7 Shane Boyd, QB

On the quarterback position…

“We have that advantage of having two quarterbacks. You don’t know what’s coming with both of us coming into the game.”

On the offense…

“This offense can do a lot of things; we can run, throw and do play-action. We can have a lot of fun with this offense.”

On Jared’s support…

“He supported me tonight and kept me going. It just wasn’t clicking for him, but he kept me going tonight. He’s a veteran.”

#91 Trey Mielsch, DE

On Ohio’s play…

“They (Ohio’s offense) were pretty good, but we did a good job of playing the option and making our assignments.”

On Kentucky’s play…

“Coach Brooks talked about this being a new season because we have six more games. We got this one tonight, and we need a lot more.”

#73 Antonio Hall, OT

On Shane Boyd

“He won the game for us with four touchdowns. He is a phenomenal athlete and a phenomenal football player.”

On Ohio’s play…

“They didn’t throw anything at us that we didn’t expect. We missed a few things down the field, but we got it together in the second half. I really credit the defense because Ohio is a tough team to prepare for with the option; we don’t see that a lot.”

On Jared and Shane…

“Having two quarterbacks keeps people on their heels, and they don’t know what to expect. Jared and Shane are both great; they’re not one-dimensional.”

Ohio Coach Brian Knorr

On Ohio’s offensive play in the first half …

“I felt both defenses did a good job in the first half with the speed of the game. Our defense created some movement and Kentucky’s defense did a good job in their 3-4. We weren’t able to run the ball like we needed to, but we had good field position. They did a good job on defense, but we didn’t adjust real well early.”

On running the ball most of the first half …

“We are always going to try to run the football. We tried to establish the run early, and we had such good field position that we wanted to hold onto the ball early. We felt like we could run some option, but they did a good job defending us.”

On Ohio’s third-down conversions …

“A lot of those situations were third-and-eight, third-and-nine and not many offenses are going to convert those. (Kentucky’s) ability to stop the run created those situations.”

On Shane Boyd and the Kentucky skill players …

“He’s a talented athlete. I was impressed with the Kentucky skill players. We didn’t tackle real well, but they made us miss. (Boyd) is a big kid that can run and he’s a real athlete. We knew that from watching tape, and that was a very impressive play he made on the rocket screen.”

On playing a BCS conference team …

“We want to play against BCS conference teams. When you play against a BCS conference team and you have an opportunity like we had in the first half, you have to take advantage of it. I thought we outplayed them in the first half to go into the locker tied seven to seven. We were in it and felt good, but we could have done a little more damage in the first half. But give a lot of credit to Kentucky. They made a lot of plays and took advantage of opportunities.”

Ohio Players

#9 Austen Everson, QB

On game…

“Their defense was stout. They were really tough up front, but we made some mistakes, too. We didn’t execute like we wanted and I think the film will really show that. I made some mistakes with reads, but their defense forced some of that.”

<>i>On play of defense…

“Our defense played well both halves. They were out there flying to the ball. Kentucky just had some quick big plays. Sometimes when the offense isn’t helping you that much it makes it tough on a defense.”

On second half adjustments…

“We switched some things up a little bit. I missed some reads when I should have handed it off on the option and things like that. We had a better balance in the second half. The offense works much better when everyone gets the ball and we spread it around.”

#11 Chip Cox, CB

On Boyd…

“At the beginning of the week we were planning for Boyd to start. So we were watching a lot of tape on him. We knew when he came in they were going to run the ball. We knew he was their biggest weapon. We weren’t really scared of Lorenzen, because we knew Boyd was their biggest threat, as everyone saw. He can throw and run, plus he has size. I think he’s 6’2″ and 220. He can run the ball and throw the ball. I mean, what can a defense do?”
