The UK softball team took home two victories in its final exhibition games of the fall on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the UK Softball Complex. The Cats defeated intrastate rivals Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky as part of the two-day 2003 Battle Against Breast Cancer tournament hosted by Kentucky.

The Cats scored three runs in the fourth inning against the Eagles to pull ahead for good in game one. Crystalie Wolfe drove in UK’s first run with an RBI-double to left field and scored two plays later on an RBI from Meghan Brooks. Pinch runner Callie Kovacs rounded home in the sixth on a passed ball to give Kentucky another insurance run and a 4-0 win. Wolfe earned the complete-game victory for Kentucky after giving up only three hits and no earned runs while striking out three Eagles.

Amber Janneck got the Cats off to a good start against the Colonels, leading off the game with a line drive to left field. After a single from Rachel Friberg, Janneck scored on a passed ball to put Kentucky up 1-0 and Cooper followed by driving in her second run of the day with an RBI single. The Cats tacked on five more in the seventh, as Brooke Marnitz led the way with a bases-clearing triple, padding Kentucky’s lead en route to an 8-0 victory. Amy Kendall pitched seven shutout innings for Kentucky, giving up only four hits while fanning five Colonels.

The Cats ended the tournament, which raised approximately 1,500 dollars for breast cancer research, 3-1 and were declared the winner based on run differential. EKU and Western Kentucky also finished 3-1 in tournament play, while Georgetown and MSU ended 1-3 and 0-4, respectively.
