Three of the four singles flight final matches Sunday at the Kentucky Fall Classic were draped in shades of Kentucky blue, as newcomers Aibika Kalsarieva, Sarah Foster and Lara Maurer each captured titles in their respective flights.
Kalsarieva completed a stunning run to the Kentucky Fall Classic blue flight title in which she failed to drop a single set. Sunday, the junior dispatched Notre Dame’s Catrina Thompson, 6-3, 7-5.
“Aibika played very well and beat some very good players in winning her first college title,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said.
Sarah Foster, a freshman from Lexington Christian Academy, captured the white flight with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame.
“Sarah continues to play at a level that is extremely impressive so early in her career. She’s showing great commitment, and we’re very happy for her to get this win in her hometown,” Guilbeau said.
Lara Maurer, a freshman from Bay Village, Ohio, won the green flight finals with an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ohio State’s Anna Volberg.
“Lara was wonderful today beating an opponent who got the best of her in junior tennis. Lara’s spirit was tremendous today,” Guilbeau said.
Also victorious today were freshmen Caroline Winebrenner and Joelle Schwenk, a pair of two-set winners over opponents from Middle Tennessee State and Notre Dame, respectively. Junior Danielle Petrisko dropped a two-setter to Lala Sufi of Purdue.
Guilbeau is excited by the potential of his young Wildcat team.
“This team has decided there’s no limit to what they can on the tennis court. I’m so impressed with all of their performances this weekend. We had a nice turnout this weekend and I really appreciate the support we had these three days. “
