The UK women’s soccer team (3-5-1, 1-0) goes for its second conference win in as many tries Friday evening when the Cats take on LSU (7-1-1, 0-0). The match is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT at the UK Soccer Complex. The match marks Kentucky’s first home contest since a Sept. 13 loss to Rutgers in the UK Invitational.
Last Friday, the Cats came through with a timely win in the conference opener at Vanderbilt, as Elizabeth Ramsey’s 65th-minute steal and ensuing goal was the difference in Kentucky’s shutout of the Commodores. The win ended UK’s four-match losing streak, the longest in school history.
For the Cats to be victorious Friday evening, they’ll have to bring a defensive presence similar to the showing at Vanderbilt. LSU brings to Lexington one of the most prolific offenses in the country. The Tigers are third in the NCAA in average goals per game with an even four. Freshman forward Stacy Bishop has been a pleasant early surprise for the Tigers. The Floridian leads the SEC with averages of 1.11 goals per game and 2.44 points per game.
With a win Friday, UK Coach Warren Lipka would become only the second coach in the history of SEC women’s soccer to record 50 conference victories. History is on Lipka’s side, as the former South Carolina goalkeeper has an unblemished record in six meetings against the Tigers. The Cats and Tigers were scheduled to meet last season in Baton Rouge, but torrential downpours led to the game’s cancellation.
Friday evening marks the “Big Blue Bash” at the UK Soccer Complex. Elementary students who bring in a report card with an “A” grade will be admitted for $1; families and guests of these students get in for $4. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a “Go Big Blue” window decal. Fans who bring a ticket stub from last weekend’s Kentucky-Florida football game can register to win a Kentucky Football collectible item.
