LEXINGTON, Ky. – Head coach Ian Collins and the Kentucky men’s soccer team will travel to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. E.D.T. Kentucky (1-0) blanked UNC Asheville, 3-0, in its season opener, while Cincinnati (0-0-3) has yet to win or lose a game, recording ties in all three of its contests thus far.
“Cincinnati is a very athletic team that has a lot of individual ability,” Collins said. “They are always well coached and well prepared. This will be a very big test for us.”
Cincinnati opened its season with a 0-0 tie at Bowling Green. The Bearcats then traveled to New Mexico for the Lobo Invitational and recorded a 1-1 tie against Cal State Northridge and a 2-2 tie against New Mexico. The Bearcats’ three ties mark the first time the program has started without a win or loss in its first three games. Senior back Dustin Dobbs received all-tournament honors for his performance that included an assist on the game-tying goal against Cal State Northridge.
The UK-UC matchup will take place at Meyers Field on the University of Cincinnati’s campus. Meyers has an artificial surface and smaller playing field that Kentucky players will have to adjust to.
“We are not used to astro-grass and so this will have an immediate impact on the game,” Collins said. “The size of the field means that players will have very little time and space to work with and I expect there to be a tough physical battle with Cincinnati.”
Cincinnati leads Kentucky in the all-time series, 6-3-1, but the Cats downed Cincy, 1-0, last season. Former Wildcat Monty Frazier scored the game-winning goal in the 21st minute and Nathan Fleetwood, another former Cat, was credited with the assist. The game marked Coach Collins’ 99th win at Kentucky.
The Cats hit the road again on Sunday to face Western Kentucky in Bowling Green at 3 p.m. E.D.T.
