LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jared Lorenzen threw four touchdown passes and becameKentucky’s career passing yardage leader as the Wildcats beat Murray State 37-6Saturday night.
Kentucky (1-1) started slowly but eventually wore down the NCAA DivisionI-AA Racers (1-1) in the first meeting between the schools in football.Lorenzen completed 14 of 21 passes for 197 yards. He now has 8,566 careerpassing yards, breaking Tim Couch’s mark of 8,435.
It was the fifth time in his career that Lorenzen threw at least fourtouchdown passes in a game.
Kentucky punted on its first two possessions before scoring 16 points inless than 2? minutes spanning the first and second quarters.
Derek Abney returned a punt 25 yards to the Murray State 28, then leapt overtwo defenders to catch an 11-yard touchdown pass from Lorenzen with 22 secondsleft in the first quarter.
Two plays into Kentucky’s next series, Lorenzen connected with Chris Bernardfor a 60-yard touchdown.
Murray State tried to run a reverse on the ensuing kickoff, but Kentucky’sClaude Sagaille stopped Terrence Biggers at the 1. Vincent Burns tackledquarterback Stewart Childress in the end zone on the next play, extending theWildcats’ lead to 16-0.
A 12-yard touchdown pass from Lorenzen to Glenn Holt made it 23-0. TheRacers scored late in the half on a 5-yard touchdown run by Chad Cook.
A third-quarter fumble recovery at the Murray State 13 by Kentucky’s RaymondFontaine set up Lorenzen’s final scoring pass, a 15-yarder to Alexis Bwenge.Backup quarterback Shane Boyd finished the scoring with a 27-yardfourth-quarter run.
Murray State fell to 2-11-2 all-time against Division I-A competition. TheRacers finished with 189 yards of total offense. Kentucky sacked Childressseven times.
