North Carolina scored once in the first half and never looked back, running away to a 4-0 victory over 24th-ranked Kentucky Friday evening at the Nike Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Cats managed only three shots against the 17-time national champion Tar Heels.
North Carolina got on the board early, as Lori Chalupny beat Kentucky goalkeeper Liz Butler from 16 yards out in the 23rd minute to give the Heels the only goal they would need. Carolina added second-half goals from midfielder Mary McDowell, all-America forward Lindsay Tarpley and forward Anne Morrell to lock up the Cats’ first loss on the season. Kentucky drops to 2-1, while Carolina moves to 3-0.
UK wraps up play in the Nike Carolina Classic Sunday when the Wildcats take on eighth-ranked Duke at 12 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
