FT. WAYNE, Ind. – Kentucky scored a goal late in the first period and took control in the second half, routing Cincinnati by a 4-0 count in the Cats’ final exhibition at the IPFW/adidas Soccer Showcase. Senior Heather Saas added two goals Sunday for a tournament-leading four goals on the weekend.

Saas opened the scoring for Kentucky for the second time in as many days. Saas took a pass from Elizabeth Ramsey, dribbled several yards through the left side of the box before sending a low, dribbling shot into the right side of the goal at 37:43 for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.

Alli Haeussler became the second Wildcat to dent the net when she took a pass from senior Lauren Russell, raced through the middle of the box and beat goalkeeper Tracy Hale on her right side to make the tally 2-0. The Cats, however, were far from finished. Saas once again took a pass near the top of the box, charged from the left side and nailed a solid shot from eight yards out past the diving Hale.

Finally, freshman Elisabeth Jones made her presence known as a Wildcat. The reigning Miss Kentucky Soccer took a pass from Courtney McCrudden near the top of the box, approached the goal with a defender in tow and held off the Bearcat before striking Kentucky’s fourth goal of the game.

Kentucky goalkeeper Liz Butler followed keeper Anne Ogundele’s strong Friday showing against Ohio State with a two-save shutout against the Bearcats.

Kentucky Coach Warren Lipka was encouraged by the weekend results.

“We’re a couple steps further along than last year, and we’re excited about our chances of having a really good year,” Lipka said.

Kentucky opens the 2003 regular season this Friday, Aug. 29 against Davidson at the UK Soccer Complex. The match is set for 7:30 p.m.
