Photos from Wednesday’s practice

Wildcats Limping: As usual after a week of preseason practices, strained muscles and plain ol’ tired legs are challenging the Wildcats, noted Coach Rich Brooks after Wednesday’s workout. Several players missed all or part of the day’s practice because of various ailments, mostly because of the strained or sore muscles.

Among players missing practice is junior wide receiver Tommy Cook, who is dealing with a bone spur in his ankle. Cook missed practice on Wednesday and will be re-evaluated tomorrow. Brooks also said that there is no timetable for the return of senior wide receiver Derek Abney, who has a strained hamstring.

“It could be three days, 10 days, or the week of the Louisville game,” Brooks said. “We won’t put him (Abney) back out here until he’s ready.”

An area of concern for Brooks is the punting game after the graduation of long snapper Coleman Barnes and All-America punter Glenn Pakulak. After some inconsistencies on Tuesday, Brooks noted that the punt unit looked much improved in today’s practice.

Brooks also said he has begun narrowing repetitions for the third-, fourth-, and fifth-team players as the team gets more focused on the season opener against Louisville. The coaches will begin installing the game plan on Wed. Aug. 20 and practices will be closed to fans and media beginning on that date.
