Two members of the University of Kentucky women’s golf team, Kelly Anders and Stacy Springer, have qualified for the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, which is slated for Aug. 4-10 at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.
Anders and Springer qualified for the tournament by shooting a 72 and 76, respectively, each tying for third in one of the qualifying rounds that are being held July 7-15 around the country.
Anders, a native of Springfield, Ill., qualified with a 72 at the Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, Calif., on July 7. Anders, who recently finished her eligibility at UK, will be competing in her third U.S. Amateur Championship, and has qualified for the U.S. Amateur in each of her three attempts. The senior was one of the top leaders for UK this year, notching two top-five finishes and leading Kentucky in the first three tournaments of the 2002-03 season.
Springer, who will be a junior at UK in 2003-04, qualified with a round of 76 at the Eden Prairie, Minn., Olympic Hills Golf Course. The native of St. Charles, Ill., competed in eight of nine tournaments this season for the Cats, finishing the year strong by tying for 29th place at the SEC Championships in Lexington.
