University of Kentucky softball player Lyndsey Angus was selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America second team, it was announced today. The teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

Angus has been an All-SEC performer the past three years. She was named to the first team her sophomore and junior years and the second team this season. The kinesiology major has accumulated a 3.317 GPA in her four years at UK and has been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll the past two years. This is her first Academic All-America honor.

“I’m so thrilled for Lyndsey and also very pleased that our standard of academic and athletic excellence continues to be recognized,” Coach Beth Pruitt said.

Angus caps off a remarkable career at Kentucky as the second leading batter in UK history. Her .384 batting average this season is good enough for fourth best in the record books and helped her improve her career average to .360.

In conference games, she led the entire SEC with a .429 average. Her .532 on-base percentage was the second highest in the league.

The Leominster, Mass., native walked 27 times this year, breaking the UK single season walks record she set her sophomore year and tied her junior year. Her 98 career walks not only smashes the Kentucky record but also moves her into fourth place in the SEC career record books.

This season, Angus led the team in runs (35), home runs (7), slugging percentage (.589) and walks (27). Besides the bases-on-balls record, Angus also established a top single-season mark for on-base percentage (.478). She is the career leader in that category with a .440 mark.

Kentucky has placed a player on the Academic All-America second team each of the past four years. Leslie Kwiatkowski earned the honor in 2000 and Angie Dal Pazzo (2001) and Beth Fogle (2002) have followed.

All three 2003 Verizon Academic All-America teams will be available on the CoSIDA web site at www.cosida.com.
