Three-time All-American Bradley Wheeldon, a junior from Eubank, Ky., has been selected to represent the United States in the Pan American Games, scheduled for August 1-16 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Wheeldon is slated to participate in the air rifle event, in which he took third place at the 2003 NCAA Rifle Championships in March.
Wheeldon is the first shooter with UK ties to participate in international competition since former UK great Nancy Johnson won a gold medal in air rifle at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Wheeldon also has been selected to the 2003 Verizon University Division Men’s At-Large Academic All-District IV team. Wheeldon was voted to the third team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To earn a nomination, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.20 grade point average and must be a starter or top reserve on their respective squad. The fourth district is comprised of schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
Wheeldon adds his third academic honor of the spring after his selections to the College Rifle Coaches Association All-Academic Team in March and the SEC Academic Honor Roll in April. In the range, Wheeldon once again was named a first-team All-American after taking second place in smallbore and third place in air rifle at the 2003 NCAA Rifle Championships.
