Huntington, W. Va. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team picked up their sixth top-five finish in 10 tournaments on Saturday when they finished second at the Marshall Invitational, which was played at the par-71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va. For the second straight year a UK freshman took home the individual crown.
As a team UK finished with a three-round 873, 22 strokes behind tournament winner Illinois who won with a 1-under par 851. Indiana tied Kentucky for second place, while Louisville with an 874 (+22) and Toledo with an 882 (+30) rounded out the top five.
Cat freshman Matt Kohn, who finished the first day tied for first with 6-under par 136, defeated IU’s Jeff Overton in a one-hole playoff to win the individual title. Both men fired a final-round 75 to leave them tied for the lead a 211. Illinois’s Patrick Nagle, 213 and Ryan Tendall, 213, finished tied for third with Louisville’s Mark Anderson to round out the top five.
Last year UK freshman John Holmes left Huntington with the individual medal. However, Holmes didn’t fare so well in this year’s tournament. He finished the first day in 51st place after shooting a six-over 77 in the first round and a three-over 74 in the second. On Saturday he shot an even-par 71 to finish in 27th place. Mark Blakefield who finished the first two rounds in the top 10 was unable to overcome Saturday’s windy conditions and shot a final-round 82 to fall to 33rd. Ryan Coyne shot a three-round 224 and finished 36th, while Brandon Waldrop rounded out the UK team with a three-round 229 to finish in 58th.
The Cats are back on the links on Saturday, Apr. 12 when they head to Columbus, Ohio to participate in Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Intercollegiate tournament.
