The 15th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team completed a weekend sweep with its 7-0 victory over No. 47 LSU at the Boone Tennis Center on Sunday, March 30. With the win, UK improves to 16-6 overall and 6-2 in the Southeastern Conference. LSU fell to 8-10 and 1-7 in the SEC.
UK claimed the doubles point after sweeping all three doubles matches. Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen, ranked eighth in the country in doubles, defeated LSU’s Rocia Fantilli and Lauren Seaman by a count of 8-5 at the top spot, improving the tandem’s doubles record to 12-2. Leigh Bradwell and Jill Buckley improved to 6-6 with an 8-4 win over Jessica Ferguson and Marina Chiarelli at the second spot and Nathalie Roels and Shannon Stafford defeated Daysi Espinal and Camila Caliari, 8-2, at the third position.
In singles, Shannon Stough, Witten, Roels and Trefethen each won their respective matches in straight sets. At number-three singles Jill Buckley won her first set over Chiarelli, 6-4. Chiarelli then rebounded to take the second set by a 6-3 count. Refusing to give in, Buckley stormed back and took the third set 6-2, to win the singles point. Roels’ two-spot match with Jessica Ferguson played out to the exact same score with Roels taking the victory.
UK is back in action on Firday, Apr. 4 when they travel to Alabama for the first of two road matches. The Cats will leave Tuscaloosa and head to Auburn for their match with the Tigers on Sunday, Apr. 6.
