March 26, 2003
The University of Kentucky men’s swimming and diving teams will compete in the 2003 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship beginning Thursday, March 27. The meet, being held at the Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas, will end on Saturday, March 29. The Cats will have five swimmers and one diver competing in the meet.
The swimmers will be senior Roger Watkins, junior Fernando Barros, sophomore Daniel Cruz and freshmen Daniel Farnham and Steven Manley. Senior and three-time All-American Clayton Moss will be the lone diver for UK.
Moss will be competing on the one-meter and three-meter springboards and the platform. He won the three-meter event at last month’s Southeastern Conference Championships at Auburn and finished second in the one-meter and platform events. In qualifying, he garnered the highest Zone-B totals on the one-meter and three-meter springboards and qualified second on the platform. Moss’s highest finish in the NCAA Championships is second on the one-meter springboard. He’s vying for his fourth-straight All-America selection.
In swimming, Watkins will be competing in the 100 and 200-breaststroke, the 50-freestyle, the 200-free relay and the 200 and 400-medley relays. Watkins received All-America honors in 2001 for his accomplishments in the 200-medley relay and the 200-free relay. Barros will be competing in the 50 and 100-free style and all five of the relay events, which include the 200-free, 200-medley, 400-free, 800-free, and 400-medley. Cruz will join Barros on each of the relay teams as well as competing in the 100 and 200-butterfly. Manley will compete in the 200 and 500-freestyle and the 200, 400 and 800-free relays. Farnham will compete in all relay events and the 100-freestyle.
Competition will begin at Noon ET on Thursday, March 27.
