Lexington, Ky. –
UK was plagued by errors for the second day in a row as Indiana State completed a two-game sweep of the homestanding Wildcats, 7-3. The Sycamores (5-3, 0-0 MVC) broke open a 3-3 game in the eighth inning when two Kentucky (7-8, 0-0 SEC) miscues led to four ISU runs.
The Bat Cats fell behind 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning when ISU’s Barry Warn tripled to score Chris Hall, who had reached first base on an error. UK fought back to tie the game at 3-3 on the power of Mike Breyman’s third home run of the season, a blast over the wall in right center field. The Sycamores blew the game open in the eighth, though, when Jereme Hatler started the inning with a double, Ben Vannatter reached on an error and Jordan Bichanich singled to load the bases. Michael Miller singled to score Hatler, Josh Prickett reached on an error, scoring Vannatter and John Purdom delivered a two-out single to score Miller and Prickett. Kentucky was unable to muster any offense in its last two trips to the plate and fell to the Sycamores for the second consecutive day.
Reliever West Harris (0-1) took the loss for UK. Kenny Geiersbach (1-1) picked up his first victory for ISU. Breyman led the Kentucky offense, going 3-for-4. Jake Kungl also had two hits for the Cats.
Kentucky now moves on to Southeastern Conference play, traveling to Oxford, Miss., for a weekend series against the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebels and Cats open the series on Friday, March 14th, at 7:30 p.m. EST.
