The University of Kentucky Wildcats (6-10) played a doubleheader with Ohio State (10-6) that they’d like to forget. The 18th-ranked Buckeyes scorched the Cats for 12 extra base hits, including six home runs, en route to 10-2 and 12-3 wins Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex.

In the first game, the second batter of the game, Kristine Himes, homered to left-center to give Ohio State the 1-0 lead. UK answered in the bottom half of the first, when a triple by junior Rachel Friberg scored Nikki Jones, who was on third. A double by freshman Ingrid Lochelt scored Friberg and gave the Cats a one-run advantage.

But that was all Kentucky could get as they gave up five runs in the top of the second and two each in the fourth and six innings. With the eight-run rule in effect, Ohio State came away with the 10-2 win.

In the second game, the Buckeyes hammered the Cats for 12 hits and 12 runs. Himes hit two more home runs for OSU and had six RBI’s. Kentucky was able to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Megan Brooks and a two-run single by Friberg. With Ohio State up by nine following the fifth inning, the mercy rule once again came into play giving the Buckeyes the victory.

Jones and fellow senior Lyndsey Angus extended their hitting streaks to six and five games, respectively. Jones went 3-6 in the two games and upped her team-leading average to .346.

The Cats will look to rebound this weekend when they play host to SEC opponent Florida. A doubleheader with the Gators will begin Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. ET at the UK Softball Complex. The two teams will also play on Sunday at 1 p.m.
