HOUSTON, TEXAS – After rain washed away the first day of the Houston Invitational, the University of Kentucky softball team was able to play back-to-back games on Saturday. The Cats (5-7) fell to Texas Tech 5-4 and defeated Texas-San Antonio in five innings, 11-2.
Against Texas Tech in the first game, the Cats scored first when a Rachel Friberg infield single scored Nikki Jones in the bottom of the first. Tech answered in the top of the third. Following a popup, three straight singles loaded the bases. After another popup, Andrea Joachims cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. Joachims would score on a single by Lisa Lawler giving the Raiders a 4-1 lead.
Facing a new pitcher in the bottom of the fourth inning, Kentucky was able to chip away at the lead. With one out and the bases loaded, Lori Melchi hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Friberg. Megan Glenn then came up and punched a single into right field, bringing in Ingrid Lochelt. Following a Megan Brooks walk, Nikki Jones hit a line drive right at the shortstop, ending the inning.
Texas Tech scored a run in the top of the sixth, pushing the lead to 5-3. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cats loaded the bases on two singles and a hit batter. Jones grounded out to second, scoring Melchi. Jessica Nance filled the open first base with a walk, loading the bases for Lyndsey Angus. The senior hit a line drive to deep center field that was caught at the warning track, halting the Kentucky threat.
A scoreless seventh inning saw the Raiders come away with the 5-4 win.
UK turned right around and played Texas-San Antonio in the second game of the day. The Roadrunners had defeated Texas Tech in the morning game, 4-2.
For the second straight game, Kentucky was able to score in the first inning. With Nance standing on third, Friberg on first and two outs, Friberg took off towards second in attempt to draw a throw from the catcher. The catcher overthrew second and Nance trotted home for the 1-0 lead. UTSA brought two across the plate for the brief 2-0 lead. The Cats scored two of their own in the top of the third on Angus’ second home run of the season.
A five-run fourth and a three-run fifth gave Kentucky an 11-2 advantage. With the eight-run rule in effect, the Cats got the win after holding the Roadrunners scoreless in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cats face host Houston at 8 p.m. Central Saturday night and will play their only game on Sunday against No. 25 Oregon at 9 a.m. Central.
