Chapel Hill, N.C. – The 25th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team upset the No. 7 North Carolina Tarheels, 4-3, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 21. The victory, its fourth straight, improved UK’s record to 8-4.
In doubles, Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen continued their incredible play as a doubles tandem knocking off UNC’s No. 19 team of Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn, 8-6. Nathalie Roels and Shannon Stafford, who have also emerged as a tough doubles team for the Cats, defeated Tanja Markovic and Lee Bairos, 8-5, to give UK the 1-0 lead.
In the singles draw, 37th-ranked Witten dropped a tough three-set match at the top spot to No. 11 Pinchbeck, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, No. 48 Roels was beaten by No. 61 Aniela Mojzis. In the third spot, Jill Buckley swept Kendall Cline in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to tie the match at 2-2. Shannon Stough then went on to defeat Markovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. In No. 5 singles, 89th-ranked Trefethen clinched the victory for UK with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Bunn.
“This is a tremendous victory for us,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “The players on this team have shown they are willing to put the team first. The whole UK women’s tennis family has adopted an idea of cinergy. They have shown the whole team is bigger than any one part.”
UK is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on Purdue at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
