Lexington, Ky. – Juniors James Doaty and Kris Landers along with senior Chad Johnson all had a hand in breaking the 800-meter meet record Saturday in the Rod McCravy Memorial at UK’s Nutter Field House. The trio beat the previous McCravy record time of 1:49.57 in the 800-meters set by Kentucky’s Hunter Spencer in 2002. All three runners, in addition to UK’s Jean Balan, who placed fifth, landed NCAA provisional qualifying times in the event, though Doaty’s time of 1:48.63 establishes the new record.
Senior Matt Smothermon recorded a personal-best in the high jump with a leap of 7-00.25 to take first place. Sophomore Simidele Adeagbo ran a dead-heat time of 7.61 with East Tennessee State’s Chantella Vernon to take first in the 60-meter dash. Adeagbo also excelled in the 200-meters, establishing a new personal-best time of 25.10.
Also turning in a solid performance was junior All-American Jeff Chakouian in recording an NCAA provisional-qualifying distance of 62-10 in the shotput. Taking second place in the mile was sophomore Beth Heimann with a time of 4:52.88. Following closely behind was junior Brooke Patterson at 4:53.62.
Former UK football standout Ernest Simms showed no signs of slowing up on the track Saturday in taking second place in the 60-meter dash while recording a personal-best 21.46 in the 200-meters to take fifth. Junior Elmetta Johnson hurdled a previous high in completing the 60-meter hurdles in 8.51 seconds.
