Norcross, Ga. – No. 1 seed Jesse Witten fell in his morning quarterfinals match with Mississippi’s Alex Hartman Saturday, eliminating him from the SEC Indoor Championships. The doubles teams of Elliott Datlow/Alex Hume and Evan Austin/Tim Morgan lost their only matches of the day. Witten and junior Rahim Esmail were unable to play their first round doubles match due to an injury.
Witten opened up his match with Hartman, seeded seventh in the tournament and ranked 24th in the country, and found himself down a break. He dropped the first set 6-3 but answered in the second, taking it 6-3. The two went back and forth in the third set, but Hartman eventually came out on top, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Austin and Morgan advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles bracket when their opponents, Janne Holmia and Trey Johnson from Florida were unable to compete because of an injury. Austin and Morgan were unable to keep up with their next opponents, the third-seed team from Vanderbilt made up of Bobby Reynolds and Lewis Smith, as they fell, 8-3. Datlow and Hume took on the team of Nicolas Boeker and Bo Hodge from Georgia, ranked 43rd. Boeker and Hodge dominated the match, winning 8-1.
