Cold Cats Bounce Into Consolation
After a 51% shooting effort against Arizona State on Monday, theWildcats shot just 37.3% from the field as Virginia fought back from anine-point first-half deficit to earn a 75-61 victory. The win advanced theCavaliers into the Maui Invitational Championship game while Kentuckyfell into a battle for third-place with Gonzaga.
Against a UVA zone defense, the Cats struggled to score from outside,missing their first 17 three-point shots. Keith Bogans finally canned athree with 8:18 remaining to trim the Cavs lead to three, 51-48. AfterTodd Billet hit one of six UVA three-pointers in the second half,Brandon Stockton followed with a three as well. But despite closing themargin to two with 2:36 remaining, 61-59, Virginia held on, hitting itsfoul shots down the stretch for the 14-point win. UK finished 2-for-22from outside the arc.
Marquis Estill had 10 points in the first five minutes, but foultrouble sidelined the senior for most of the game. He saw just 13 minutes ofaction. The Cavs shot 57.1% in the second half and for the game,outrebounded the Cats 41-34.
Cats vs. Bulldogs
Kentucky will battle Gonzaga in the third-place game. The game will airon ESPN2 at 11:30 a.m. HT, 4:30 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs lost to Indianadespite a terrific comeback, 17 points with three minutes to play,before falling 76-75. Kentucky and Gonzaga have never met. The 20th-rankedZags opened the season last Friday with a 69-61 win over Hofstra.
Against West Coast Athletic Conference teams, the Wildcats are 3-0lifetime, beating Pepperdine (1985), Portland (1989) and San Francisco(1993).
Ronny Turiaf (6-10, 243, C) has shot more free throws in three games(38-44) than the Cats have shot in two games (25-36).

UVA Cat Scratches
UK fell to 1-1 on the season, 6-2 all-time in Maui Invitationalaction. It marks the second time in three trips to the Maui tournament thatthe Cats have played for third place. In 1997, UK beat Missouri, 77-55,in the consolation game.
Jules Camara came in and relieved Marquis Estill in the post,finishing the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. It was theCats’ first double-double of the season, Camara’s fifth of his career.
With Camara’s four blocks, he moves past UK assistant coach ReggieHanson (119) and into a tie with Kenny Walker for seventh place on theall-time blocked shots list. Camara now has 122 blocked shots and trailsNazr Mohammed in sixth place by 13 blocks.
Brandon Stockton scored his first points as a Wildcat, a crucialthree-pointer in the second half.
After a 16-26 performance from the foul line against ASU in thetournament opener, UK hit 9-of-10 free throws against UVA.
Keith Bogans needs nine points to reach 1,400. On the all-time UKlist, he’s four shy of Rick Robey in 20th place and eight shy of WinstonBennett in 19th place
