El Paso, Texas – Kentucky sophomore golfer John Holmes is in a tie for second place after the first two rounds of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Tournament at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas.

Holmes finished the first round on Monday with a 4-over par 75 leaving him in a tie for ninth. In the second round Holmes displayed why he was selected to participate in the All-American Tournament, firing a 4-under par 67 to catapult him into a tie for second with a two-round score of 142(E). He and two other golfers sit three strokes behind tournament leader Adam Rubinson, from Texas Christian, who ended the day with a two-round total of 139 (-3).

Holmes is one of 24 golfers selected to play in the tournament. The field is made up of the best collegiate golfers in the country, including U.S. Amateur Champion Ricky Barnes from Arizona, who finished with a two-round score of 153(+11) leaving him in a tie for 19th.

Holmes will finish his third round on Tuesday. He will be paired with tournament leader Rubinson and North Carolina’s Dustin Bray. They tee off at 10:30 a.m. EST.
