UK PLAYERS

Rita Adams, Guard

On what got the team going in the second half…

“I think everybody was looking for me to come along, and once that spark came it was like a train and everybody jumped on.”

On getting the season off to a good start…

“It’s a big win. After a win like this everyone can keep their heads up and it gives us confidence.”

Shambrica Jones, Forward

On the rebounding difference between the first and second halves…

“We gave up a lot of rebounds. They’ve got some good post players, but in the second half we were able to put everything together and get the win.”

On being a spark for the team…

“That’s kind of my role. I’m a smaller post player so I have to really battle and get people fired up.”

Southern Illinois Head Coach Lori Opp

On Kentucky dominating second half…

“I think Kentucky came out and they picked up their intensity level. Obviously their press hurt us. We had eight turnovers at the half and ended up with 20 for the game – I was honestly surprised it wasn’t more.”

On UK”s defensive pressure…

“I thought they came out defensively much more intense in the second half. We tried to make the same passes we made in the first half and didn’t get away with it. They made us pay. They went down to the other end and scored. Any time you get 52 points in the paint and those aren’t all from your post players, defensively, we weren’t doing some things we needed to.”

On UK guard Rita Adams

“Rita Adams is so athletic and so quick – she was all over the place. I’m impressed with what kind of player she is. She hurt us tonight. I know we’ve got some highlight tapes of Rita that we’ll take home with us and show our kids defensively what they need to do. She broke a couple of our kids down big-time and scored off of it.”
