Senior Jami Fritter collected her first career assist and Danielle Slupski recorded her first goal of the season as the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team upset No. 17 Michigan, 1-0, at the UK Soccer Complex Friday night.
The Wildcats (10-7-0/4-4-0) took over the series at 3-2-1 over the Wolverines (13-5-1/7-2-1 Big Ten), and will now turn their focus to the Southeastern Conference Tournament which kicks off this Thursday in Oxford, Miss.
“We’re really playing well at the end of the season and that’s something we haven’t done in the past,” Coach Warren Lipka said. “This team is finding energy at the end of the year when we need it and we’re getting results – I’m very proud of them.”
Prior to the game, Keri Boyce, Jami Fritter, Christal Mattingly and Courtney Pollock were honored on Senior Night as they played their final home game as Wildcats. Fritter and Mattingly definitely made their night memorable when they combined to assist Slupski’s game-winner at 12:02 in the first period. The Columbus, Ohio, native connected from 18 yards out that beat U-M goalkeeper Suzie Grech to the upper-left of the Michigan goal.
UK will kick off tournament play this Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Seed, opponent and match time is still to be determined.
