LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky rifle team defeated the Ohio State University Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Buell Armory on the UK campus. The Rifle Cats finished with a combined score of 6214 and outshot OSU in both competitions with a 4661 in smallbore and 1553 in air. The Buckeyes finished with a total 6094, 4562 in smallbore and 1532 in air rifle action.
Bradley Wheeldon led the Cats with a 1578 to take the individual title. Wheeldon shot an 1185 in the smallbore competition with a top score of 399 in the prone portion. Melody Cook and newcomer Brad Donoho scored a new personal best. Cook finished with a total 1547 (1158 smallbore and 389 air rifle), while Donoho scored a 395 in the prone portion of smallbore to tally an 1152 in the competition and a 386 in air rifle.
“Overall it went very well today”, Coach Harry Mullins said. ” We are starting to move in the right direction. We are starting to turn in numbers that we are shooting on record days of training and that is a good sign for things to come.”
The Rifle Cats travel to face defending national champions, Alaska-Fairbanks, on Nov. 2. Kentucky has fallen the last two seasons to Alaska in the NCAA championship match.
