Winston-Salem, N.C. – The UK women’s tennis team saw three players advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA/Southeast Regional Championships, being played at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The three will take on opponents from a school the UK fans are very familiar with; Duke.
Freshman Nathalie Roels will face second seed and nationally-ranked (No. 28) Julie DeRoo. Senior Amy Trefethen, the 13th seed, will take on fifth-seeded Saras Arasu, who is ranked 47th in the country. UK’s top player, senior Sarah Witten, seeded fourth and ranked No. 39, will face Hillary Adams.
“This is a great opportunity for this team to show a high level of competition,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Duke is a great program and we expect to get some very good results against them.”
In other singles action, senior Shannon Stafford lost her second-round match to Duke’s Prim Siripipat, 7-5, 6-3. Siripipat is seeded 16th. Senior Jill Buckley lost to UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kendall Cline, 7-6, 7-5.
Two UK freshmen, Kacie Anson and Shannon Stough, each won their qualifying matches only to be knocked off in the first round of the main draw. Stough lost to Clemson’s Julie Coin (6-2, 6-1), ranked No. 92 and seeded seventh, while Anson lost to Wake Forest’s Katie Martzlof (6-2, 6-2), seeded sixth and ranked No. 75.
In doubles, three of UK’s four teams will see action in the quarterfinals. The team of Danielle Petrisko and Shannon Stough lost to the top-seeded Duke team of Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain, 8-2, in a tough match. Adams and McCain are ranked No. 9 in the country as a doubles team.
Second-seeded Witten and Roels, who are ranked No. 22 and have played very well this fall, knocked off the Wake Forest combination of Renata Barreto and Renata Caceres, 8-0 and will face the South Carolina tandem of Ayako Suzuki and Danielle Wiggins.
The third-seeded team of Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen, No. 41, will face Campbell’s Isabel Declercq and Pascale Veraverbeke, after downing Catherine Brown and Magda Wojdylo from South Carolina. Anson and partner Shannon Stafford will face Duke’s Katie Granson and Julia Smith, the fifth seed.
All matches will take place on Saturday. For more information on the tournament, log-on to www.tennisinformation.com. The tournament ID is 2917483.
