Winston-Salem, N.C. – Two UK freshmen advanced to the main draw of the Southeast Regional Championships being played at Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center on Thursday.

Kacie Anson and Shannon Stough advanced to the main draw when they each won in the first two rounds of qualifying at the tournament. Anson defeated Sumitra Rao of Memphis, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, in the first round and UNC-Charlotte’s Lindsay Morris, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the elite field. Stough defeated Viktoria Gruber, also from Memphis, 6-1, 6-0, and then went on to defeat Tennessee Tech’s Maja Russinova, 6-1, 6-0.

Anson will face Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest, ranked No. 75 in the country, and Stough will face Julie Coin of Clemson.

“This has been a good tournament for both girls so far,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “I’m happy to see Kacie do so well and to see Shannon continue her very high level of play.”Both women continue the tournament on Friday.
