ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team fell 5-1 to Georgia on Parent’s Night at the Georgia Soccer Stadium Friday. The Wildcats (7-5-0/2-2-0 Southeastern Conference) were held to five shots on goal as the Bulldogs (5-7-1/1-2-0 SEC) evened the overall series to 4-4-1.
The Bulldogs didn’t waste time lighting the scoreboard when junior Ashley King netted her sixth goal of the season less than seven minutes into the match. Elizabeth Metherell generated the UGA score when the sophomore midfielder lobbed the ball to Geneil Newbern along the right of the UK box. Newbern executed a cross toward the goal and King was in position to one-touch her shot to the lower-left corner of the net.
Things got worse for the Cats before the period ended as UGA increased its lead to 2-0 at 34:23. Ali Williams launched the ball from just outside the penalty box that deflected off a diving Liz Butler who saved the freshman forward’s shot. However, Beth Culver maneuvered to the right post and tapped in her second goal of the season into an empty UK net. The two-goal lead held to the break as the Cats were held shotless in a period for the first time this season.
The Dogs came out barkin’ in the second as Tricia McKee drove hard to the net and found room to shoot to the left of the net. The shot appeared to be saved as Ashley Janning held ground for Butler, but the ball ricocheted off the freshman defender to put UGA up 3-0. Georgia reached a four-goal cushion when McKee blasted a shot of the UK crossbar and Newbern was in place to slip a shot past Butler at 57:17.
Kentucky finally got a shot off at 55:17 when Elizabeth Ramsey’s 25-yard blast from the top of the box dented the net to cut the UGA lead to 4-1. But the Dogs couldn’t be chained long, as Newbern netted her second goal of night when the freshman forward’s laser from 22 yards was out of Butler’s reach to the top-right corner.
Redhsirt freshman goalkeeper Kim McHugh saw her first collegiate action as she relieved Butler in the second period, while senior forward Jami Fritter made her first appearance of the season for the Cats.
The Wildcats will finish weekend play at Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 13 for a 2 p.m. ET match with the Lady Volunteers. UK owns a 5-2-0 series lead over UT, including a 2-1-0 mark in Knoxville.
