Charlottesville, Va. – The 20th-ranked Kentucky men’s soccer team knocked off the 10th-ranked Maryland Terrapins Sunday at the Virginia Soccer Classic by a score of 2-1. The Wildcat attack got on the board twice in the first half, on goals by freshmen Lasse Lagerblom and Dani Kamras, then gave way to the UK defense, which allowed only one goal to the Terrapins, who scored eight times against Rhode Island on Friday.

UK got on the board early when Lagerblom headed a free kick by junior Nathan Fleetwood into the back of the net in the 11th minute. Kentucky stayed on the attack and found the goal again in the 28th minute. After a corner kick by freshman Jani Modig, Kamras blasted a 22-yard volley through the hands of Terrapin goalkeeper Noah Palmer to give UK a 2-0 lead, which they protected through the half.

The Wildcat defense was solid, allowing Maryland only one shot on goal, which was handled by senior goalkeeper Greg Raber. Raber made a second, more dramatic save later in the half, but his brilliance was statistically negated by an offsides call.

Maryland got on the board in the 48th minute when a header by Dominic Mediate found its way inside the far post. With the score 2-1, the Wildcats battened down the hatches. Maryland had 13 shots in the second half, but only five of those were on goal as the Cats’ pressure defense forced the Terrapins to try a number of long attempts.

Fleetwood and Modig tallied two assists on the weekend to lead the Wildcats, who also had goals on Friday from seniors Monty Frazier and Chris McDaniel. The Cats dropped a tough 3-2 loss to fifth-ranked Virginia Friday, on an 89th minute Cavalier goal.

“All credit to our guys for coming back after a tough loss,” UK Coach Ian Collins said. “We deserved better Friday, but we came back out today, fought hard, and got the result we deserved. Maryland is a very good team but we came out and showed some of what we’re made of. We’re only going to continue to get better.”

Next weekend, the Wildcats will travel to Greenville, S.C., to take part in the Furman Invitational. On Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m., UK will take on Creighton, currently ranked 19th in the nation. The Cats will then face 2002 NCAA Tournament participant Butler on Sunday, Sept. 8, at noon.
