LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – University of Kentucky freshman golfer John Holmes shot an even par 72 in round one to stand in a tie for 24th place at the NCAA Central Region Tournament in Little Rock, Ark., on Thursday, May 16 at the Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Holmes is second among the six golfers who qualified for the tournament as individuals behind Ohio University’s Erik Herberth who is tied for 13th with a 1-under par 71. Overall, Bret Guetz of Texas Christian and John Kidwell of Oklahoma are tied for the lead with a 4-under par 68.

A native of Cambellsville, Ky., Holmes started the day on hole 10 shooting par on the first two holes. He quickly lost ground by bogeying the next two holes and shot even through his first nine to finish 2-over par. That trend continued on holes 1-3, but birdies on holes four, seven and nine sandwiched around a bogey on five gave Holmes a 2-under par after 18 to finish even on the day.

The tournament continues with round two on Friday, May 17, with Holmes teeing off at 9:09 a.m. CT.
