Wildcats in Final Examinations: The Wildcats have examinations for the spring semester this week.Most of the players will go home in May, then return to Lexington in June.
Coaches Begin Spring Recruiting Period: The spring recruiting period begins this week for the UK coaching staff. Coaches are allowed to visit high schools, meet with principals, coaches and counselors, visit athletic combines, and evaluate athletic competition, such as spring football practice, baseball, track, etc.
ESPN Classic to Carry Kentucky Football, Men’s Basketball on Derby Day: The ESPN Classic cable channel will have a strong Wildcat flavor on Sat., May 4, with replays of UK football and men’s basketball games.
Saturday at 2 p.m., ESPN Classic will replay the 1998 Kentucky at LSU football game. The Wildcats won that game, 39-36, on Seth Hanson’s 33-yard field goal as time expired. It was Kentucky’s first road win over a ranked opponent in 21 years.
The game was a classic, indeed, for the legendary Wildcat duo of quarterback Tim Couch and wide receiver Craig Yeast. Couch completed 37 of 50 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns. Yeast caught seven balls for 122 yards and two TDs. Running back Anthony White chipped in 102 rushing and receiving yards, including a pair of TD runs.
Saturday at 5:30 p.m., ESPN Classic will air the 1998 men’s basketball national championship game when the Wildcats vanquished Utah, 78-69, for the school’s seventh national title.
Characteristically, the “Comeback Cats” trailed at halftime before clawing to victory in the second half. Also typical was the balanced contributions from the players. Scott Padgett led the Wildcats with 17 points. Jeff Sheppard, the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, chipped in 16. The UK bench outscored the Utah reserves 18-2 in the second half, paced by Heshimu Evans (10 points, team-high six rebounds), Cameron Mills (eight points), and Jamaal Magloire (seven points and a monster game on defense).
