AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn sent 12 batters to the plate before the Wildcats recorded one out in the top of the first as the Tigers crushed Kentucky, 17-1, in five innings on Sunday, April 28 at Jane B. Moore Field in Southeastern Conference softball action. The win secured Auburn’s (33-21, 11-13 SEC) berth in the SEC Tournament. The Wildcats fell to 22-31, 4-20 SEC.
The Tigers collected seven singles, two doubles, three walks and a home run, roughing up both UK starter Morgan Marr (0 IP, 4R, 3H, 1BB) and freshman reliever Meghan Cooper (0.1 IP, 9R, 7H, 2BB) for all 13 runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Jennifer Howland (3.2 IP, 4R, 6H, 1BB) entered after Deni Zeigler’s three-run home run to right to record the final two outs of the inning.
For the first time all series, the Wildcats got on top first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Lydnsey Angus reached on a three-base error by AU right fielder Sara Dean and then came home as Andy Eilertson singled to shallow center. However, that was all the damage that UK could muster as UK finished its six-game road trip 1-5.
The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season on Thursday and Friday, May 2 and 3 at the UK Softball Complex when they play host to Arkansas in a three game SEC series. The series starts with a 3 p.m. EDT doubleheader on Thursday and concludes with a single game at 2 p.m. EDT on Friday. Friday’s festivities will include a special tribute to the five seniors prior to the game.
